Around 10.6 million children still die every year before reaching their fifth birthday; 3.3 million babies are still born, more than 4 million die within 28 days of birth. In the past year, poverty has been a big issue in third world countries. It is a big concern for children more than adults, because younger people are more dependent on a good diet to remain healthy and to grow properly. Poverty is more than the absence of material means or basic services, such as a lack of food, shelter, clean water, education or health. Poverty creates powerlessness to determine the quality of life, and compounds vulnerability when conflict or natural disaster strikes. Almost 2 million children under 5 years are underweight, when a child suffers from major poverty; they also suffer from malnutrition. 1 billion children live in poverty (that is 1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water; 270 million have no access to health services. 30,000 children die of extreme poverty every day; this is almost 11 million child deaths from poverty each year. Malnutrition is a primary cause of poor health and premature death among children in developing countries. Malnourished children are at a greater risk of death and are more likely to come from poorer households.
The economic reform
programs devised by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are
contributing in many countries to the worsening plight of the poor through
rising unemployment, higher prices and cuts in vital social services. Source:
